Healthcare Spaces No. 1
|
|
|
What Healthcare Spaces is an invitation to
visit impressive new work by some of the leading architects and interior
designers serving the nation's health care institutions. Its vivid,
four-color pages offer a personal guided tour of America's latest health
care facilities, depicting over 100 projects with over 400 color images from
more than 30 design firms. Health care administrators, physicians, medical
planners and their architects and interior designers will find this an
excellent way to assess how public and private institutions are coping with
the opportunities and challenges of managed care, advances in medical
science and technology, aging populations and the drive towards
patient-focused care.
What these installations strikingly
reveal-in projects ranging from neighborhood clinics, surgery centers and
medical offices to replacement hospitals and vast medical campuses-is a
profound change in the delivery of health care. America's determination to
contain health care costs, for example, is hastening the shift from
inpatient care to ambulatory services, specialization to target specific
needs of service area populations, and consolidation by independent
institutions into regional networks. However, the news is also about
advances in medical science and technology, which has triggered new forms of
facilities and improved care, based on competition for patients and
physicians and acceptance of psychoeuroimmunology-the therapeutic impact
that physical environment can have on patient outcomes.
Organized alphabetically by design firm,
Healthcare Spaces is user friendly, with each project indexed for easy
reference. Health care professionals and architects and interior designers
serving public and private health care institutions will find exciting new
ways to approach their work, from dignified private patient rooms to a
vibrant, life-affirming children's hospital.

Hospitality & Restaurant Design No. 2
|
|
|
Larger in scope than the first edition and
with a decidedly international flavor, Hospitality & Restaurant Design
No. 2 brings you up-to-the-minute, inspirational design solutions by 36
leading architectural/design firms.
Travel and leisure activity consumes
more and more of an increasingly sophisticated public's time. People have
come to expect a certain level of excellence when they dine out, go on
vacation or travel for business. From the glamorous Regent Beverly Wilshire
to the opulent Grand Hyatt Muscat in Oman, you'll see projects from the best
in the business.
Introduced by Roger Yee, former
editor-in-chief of Contract Design, this book has over 300 pages with more
than 500 lavish, color images which provide much needed reference in this
swiftly growing field.
At the Ritz-Carlton, Sharm El Sheikh Resort
you'll see how the architectural forms rest in the contours of the desert,
while the main lobby incorporates illusion to pharonic Egypt. In contrast,
in Las Vegas, where competition to capture the visitor's eye is enormous,
the Harley Davidson Cafe sports a 28-foot-tall Heritage Softail bike
breaking through the wall of its building and a 25x40 foot American flag
made of chain link. The 28,000-square-foot Motown Cafe, with its attention
getting marquee, is in '60s glitzy nightclub style.
Harkening back to the grand manner is the
Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, where the challenge was to protect
historical features while servicing modern needs. Warm earth tones
complemented existing marble columns and natural light flowed to the main
lobby when the clerestory windows were reopened. Other projects include New
York's venerable Algonquin Hotel, home of the Roundtable; Le Chateau
Frontenac in Quebec City; the Phoenix Marriott; the Pan Pacific Hotel on
magnificent Yokohama Bay, and many others.
All projects are indexed for easy reference
for any professional engaged in the myriad forms of design in this exciting
and challenging field.

Indonesian Accents
|
|
|
Indonesia is one of the culturally richest
regions of the world. This lavishly photographed book is a celebration,
albeit selectively, of the varied and rich qualities found in the tactile
and sensual buildings, interiors and artworks of the region, primarily
through the works of an important architectural and interior design
practice, Grahacipta Hadiprana.
Founded in 1957, the practice has always
been acutely conscious of the rich heritage of Indonesia. The collection of
their works presented in this book is indeed a delightful synthesis of
simple materiality, consummate craftsmanship and rich moods. These projects
are directly inspired by the diverse cultures and rich traditions of
Indonesia. Some of them exhibit a sensitive response to the tropical
climate. Yet others hinted at the influence of contemporary architectural
idioms.
However, what distinguishes these projects
is a palpable reverence for the unique and multifaceted traditions of the
country. Showcasing a range of multi-referential works, the book hopes to
convey the sensual refinement and expressive potency of qualities found in
traditional sources as well as contemporary creations.
Tan Hock Beng, the author, born in 1962, is
the principal of MAPS Design Studio, a practice which specializes in
architecture, urban design and interior design. He graduated from the School
of Architecture, National University of Singapore, with a Bachelor of
Architecture (Honours). Awarded the Gold Medal from the Singapore Institute
of Architects in 1989, he has been involved in many competition-winning
projects and design proposals for a diverse range of building types in
various parts of Southeast Asia.
He lectured full-time at the National
University of Singapore from 1992-1996. A critic for several design
periodicals and newspapers, he has also published extensively in
international architecture journals.

International Shopping Center Architecture
|
|
|
Blindly copying a shopping center design or
concept and transplanting it to another country can be a recipe for
disaster. Yet, there are ideas and concepts that can and should be used
anywhere.
In this magnificent book Ronald A. Altoon
seeks to isolate and show visually those architectural details that are
truly universal, that define the successful shopping center in any country,
in any culture, in any locale. Through 250 color photographs and augmented
by commentary, Mr. Altoon demonstrates the essentials that apply
universally. He does so in language that any architect, designer or
contractor can understand and implement.
Some of the areas covered are: entrances,
handrails, stairs, escalators, elevators, balconies, skylights, kiosks,
landscaping, fountains, lighting, graphics, signage and much more. Whether
the shopping center is located in Atlanta, Georgia; Hamilton, Ontario;
Mexico City; Melbourne; or Dubai; the author tightly focuses on the details
that make up the whole.
International Shopping Center Architecture
is a unique book. Much more than the sum of its parts, it becomes at once a
trove of practical transcultural architectural concepts and a beautiful book
to treasure in its own right.
